God and Religion have been perhaps the most dubious and contentious words/ideas since the dawn of time. God is an enigma which might never be able to be solved but Religion still allures and ultimately beguiles followers in gargantuan proportions.
Frankly speaking I’ve never been able to comprehend and believe the buzz around the two. I feel that people either have been hoodwinked or they themselves want to be hoodwinked about something which radically speaking is just a hoax and I believe somewhere down in their heart they know it. Just pause for a moment and think about it and you’ll know how big an industry Religion has really become. How much money there is involved. Just playing with people’s creeds, ideals, fears, qualms and emotions.
It seems that religions are like antagonistic salesmen. Apprising the world of their preponderances and the blemishes of their competitors. Its as if an unsaid competition is going on between them to lure the most number of followers. As if God fancies and favors the religion with the more number of followers. But I guess the competition wasn’t doing any religion any good, so they decided to beget their own Gods, with their own superpowers. Its like providing exclusivity to their followers. Like every religion has their own brand ambassadors.
Another thing that seems to be common among most religions is their coercing of their followers to remember to pay visit or to give time to their respective Gods everyday (even 5 times a day in some). Its their marketing strategy to keep their followers in constant touch.
Buts lets for a moment condone the aforementioned theory about religious contentions. Lets presume them for some time. Say the Gods were all true.
This would mean that God is the absolute being (as is thought mostly). A being above everyone else. An omnipotent being.
So now do you think that such a being would be so bigoted and narcissistic as to demand from his followers to worship him everyday? To pay him a visit everyday? That he would give his blessings to only those who remember him everyday and not to those who don’t? That he would be pleased with only those who bequeath money towards him and angry towards those who don’t?
The world is full of anecdotes of people who did nothing but worship Gods throughout their lifetime and then were rewarded with good luck from Gods and others were castigated. These stories delude the people.
Here, I would like to bring to your notice that I am not an Atheist. Neither am I a Theist though. What I believe is that God isn’t some supreme being having magical powers and having dominion over the whole world. After all, considering the voluminous number of Gods available, the space on earth wouldn’t be enough to give them each control over even a meter square area.
Anyways, I believe that what God personify is the most pristine state of a human being. The individuals who were able to break free of the monotonous mindsets of the common men and follow the right path. The individuals who took decisions which mild men could never dare to take. The individuals who were able to put the well beings of others before their own. So God is not something we must worship or fear. Its a state we must strive to achieve. A state within the grasp of us all if we are willing. Believe me, these Gods weren’t born Gods. They were mere men who by their rightful deeds and philanthropic attitudes were appraised by people and with time became examples to us all. Thus Gods.
The money we bestow in the name of God to the religious sites would do a hell of a lot good if we could just give it to someone in need or maybe some NGO. The time we waste hearkening to religious teachers could be better utilized in some work towards society. The everyday-praying routine would help more if it could be the everyday-feeding-the-strays routine. And a lot more.
And I assure you that if we can make such small changes in society. Achieve that change in ourselves. Then we all are Gods.
